Instead of the usual celebrity button-presser (the likes of Robbie Williams, Peter Kay and Barbara Windsor have all stepped up in the past decade), a select group of “Corona Heroes” will do the honours, in recognition of their vital efforts during the pandemic. Viewers are encouraged to get involved on the night by digging out their Christmas lights for their own special “switch-on” moment, before joining in a special 15-minute DJ set from Joel Corry. The line-up of performers for the hour-long set includes the likes of Mel C from the Spice Girls, Fleur East, Becky Hill, Tom Grennan and Diversity. Taking place in a closed set in Blackpool’s iconic Tower Ballroom, the event will be hosted by Kiss breakfast show presenters Jordan and Perri, with apperances from Ashley Banjo, singer-songwriter Rae Marris and the Illuminations’ curator Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen. The illuminations will thereafter come on, automatically, every day until the 6 th January 2020. The traditional Christmas lights will be switched on as from Friday 20 th November 2020. The Government of Gibraltar and the organisers invite everyone in Gibraltar to view ‘The Spirit of Christmas’ on both online platforms on Friday 20 th November 2020 at 7pm. The performers have been recorded as individuals or small groups and the recordings edited to into a continuous production.

The production will feature local dancers and singers, all pre-recorded prior to airing on GBC TV and GCS Facebook, and keeping to guidelines approved by the Director of Public Health. Working alongside the Gibraltar Electricity Authority, GAMPA and Gibmedia, this year’s event will be a production to be known as ‘The Spirit of Christmas’. Gibraltar Cultural Services, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture can confirm that the Christmas Festival of Lights will this year move to a broadcast and an online event.Īs previously announced, due to COVID guidelines and keeping to social responsibility, the format for the annual event will be different from previous years.
